Metatah (Sacred Tooth Filing Ceremony)

We know many of you won’t yet be in Lombok yet, but if you are, you’re absolutely invited to observe one of the most ancient & unique rituals in Balinese Hindu culture. Many of our younger family members will be participating in this ceremony.

The Metatah ceremony, also known as "tooth filing" or "Mepandes," is a traditional Balinese Hindu rite of passage that symbolizes the transition into adulthood and spiritual refinement. Performed during adolescence or before marriage, it involves the symbolic filing of the six front teeth to diminish negative human traits known as the Sad Ripu: Kama (lust), Lobha (greed), Krodha (anger), Mada (arrogance or intoxication), Moha (delusion), and Matsarya (envy). The ceremony is conducted by the local holy manand includes prayers, offerings, and blessings to purify the soul and align the individual with their spiritual duties. It is a deeply meaningful ritual, signifying maturity, self-control, and readiness to embrace life's responsibilities.

📍 Location: Wisna’s Family Home
